Organic and Sustainable Horticulture Course Information Sheet

Course Overview

This course is taught Fall semesters of even years and will provide a base of knowledge of the principles and practices of sustainable, organic, and alternative horticulture management systems. The class will review and evaluate topics including soil biological processes (compost, humus, and fertility), pest management, alternative farming systems, and organic horticulture production.  Students will study applications of sustainable and organic principles to production systems such as vegetable production, fruit production, ornamental production, and landscape and turf management.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1) Explain and discuss principles of sustainability and organic production systems.
2) Evaluate the sustainability of agricultural systems.
3) Identify resources for studying and employing sustainable and organic horticulture.
4) Construct an organic management plan for specific crops.
